Freeriding in Kaprun

Looking for the deep stuff?

Secluded slopes. Absolutely untouched powder. It's against this backdrop that freeriders really find their stride. And it sounds unbelievable, right? Actually, it sounds like freeriding in Kaprun! Beyond the groomed slopes, countless deep power runs invite you to dive in on the Kitzsteinhorn or in Viehhofen. Whether it is on your own or with an experienced guide: conquer the freeride areas of Zell am See-Kaprun!

The best freeride spots near Kaprun

  • Kitzsteinhorn: 5 freeride routes with a total length of 8.9 km and a vertical drop of 700 m make this glacier once of the most renowned freeride spots in the Alps. Additional info points and a training area for avalanche search and rescue complete the freeride offer.
  • Freeride route in Viehhofen: 4 km of freeriding trails await you in Viehhofen.

Freeride-Events on the Kitzsteinhorn

Since 2012, the X Over Ride event has taken place on the Kitzsteinhorn and serves as a Freeride Wild Qualifier event. Every year from this competition, the three best skiers and the two best snowboarders qualify to be in the top-class starting field of the Freeride World Tour. The start is at 2,652 m at Lakarscheid, and the finish is the Häuslalm at 1,970 m.

Every Monday on the Kitzsteinhorn is Freeride Monday, meaning that the Oberschneider and Hartweger ski schools offer group freeride sessions for beginners and advanced riders. Make sure to register before 4:00 pm the day before. Of course you can also book a freeride guide through hotel reception.

Safety first – especially when freeriding in Kaprun

Skiing away from groomed slopes is exciting, yet it can be dangerous. Our recommendations:

  • Inform yourself of the daily avalanche warnings.
  • Check the day's weather outlook.
  • Don't forget your safety gear: helmet, probe, shovel and avalanche beacon (hire from Ski Dome).
  • Never ski unknown terrain alone.
  • Freeride for the first time together with an experienced guide.
  • Know your limits.

Additional information is available at reception. Only one more thing to say: book your room now and dive into powder!

Become a winter action hero!

A ride down the Funslope on the Schmitten includes a one-of-a-kind feature: the SpotOn app is a mobile video system that uses GPS tracking and stationary cameras along the slope to create a cool video clip of your run. As soon as you reach the bottom, the video automatically shows up in the app on your phone. The app is free for Android and iOS.

Test your courage and head to the Snowparks! Rest and recovery await you back at the Kaprunerhof.
