The History of the Most Famous Road in Austria

The route over the Hochtor, the highest mountain of the Ennstal Alps, was already used by the Romans and Celts. In 1924, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road was conceived as a new project, and in 1929, the construction was finally approved by the Salzburg Landtag. The ceremonial opening of the road took place in 1935. Construction actively lasted for 26 months during which 870,000 cubic meters of earth and rock were moved, 115,570 cubic meters of masonry were created, and 67 bridges were built. Since then, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road has established itself as the most famous road in the Alps.

Interesting Attractions Along the High Alpine Road

The Wild- und Freizeitpark Ferleiten at an altitude of 1140 meters is a unique excursion destination. The 15-hectare wildlife park provides a home for more than 200 animals native to the Alps. During a hike through the park, you can observe donkeys, capercaillies, snow hares, wolves, and many other animals.

Another highlight along the road is the Automobil- und Motorradausstellung: Here, on 1000 square meters, the history of two- and four-wheeled vehicles is presented to you – also recommended for families.
