4 Tips for Cross-Country Skiing Beginners

Cross-country skiing is considered one of the healthiest sports ever. Hardly any movement engages so many muscles, is simultaneously gentle on the joints, and can be increased in intensity as desired. There are plenty of good reasons for cross-country skiing. And it is hard to find a more beautiful backdrop than Zell am See-Kaprun.

Here is an overview from suitable equipment to the right technique. But like in most sports, no masters fall from the sky in cross-country skiing either. To accelerate the learning curve a bit, we have put together four tips for you that will make it easier to get started in this endurance sport.

Tip 1: The Choice of Technique
Anyone who wants to learn cross-country skiing faces an important question before their first pole use: Skating or Classic? The answer to this affects, among other things, the equipment and in some cases also the route. Both variants are healthy. Both are fun. The classic style is technically a bit easier to learn. However, one should not make the decision dependent on that. After all: You can always switch!

Tip 2: Falling and Getting Up Properly
Everyone falls while cross-country skiing. The most important thing: Don’t be afraid of it! Even if you land on the ground five times, your motivation should not suffer. Getting up is just as easy as falling: Position your skis perpendicular to the direction of travel, shift your weight to the front foot, and get up over the whole foot. And off you go.

Tip 3: Taking Turns
In both skating and classic style, the 'moment of truth' occurs in the turn. To master the maneuver, you should slowly approach the curve after practicing the basics on the straight. The takeaway tip: push the outside ski outward and only briefly put weight on the inside ski. The tip of the outside ski should point inwards.

Tip 4: Suitable Equipment
In Zell am See-Kaprun, there are several options for equipping yourself. Sports shops and winter sports schools provide prepared equipment for low fees. If you want to supply yourself with your own gear right away, there are also plenty of opportunities to do so. Important besides the choice of skis (classic skis usually have scales or a skin in the middle) is the pole length. While the pole for skating should reach up to the chin, in classic style the height of the chest serves as the measurement.
„There is nothing better than stepping into the cross-country ski trail just a few steps from the hotel. The combination of the tranquility of cross-country skiing and the subsequent gourmet cuisine at Kaprunerhof makes for our perfect winter holiday.”
