World of Ice Giants near Salzburg
Admire otherworldly formations at the giant ice caves in Werfen near Salzburg. In the biggest ice cave in the world you can really feel the power of mother earth, which created this unique natural spectacle with its fascinating play of colours and huge ice giants. Explorers detected the ice caves near Salzburg at the end of the nineteenth century, which now inspire visitors from all over the world. The first footpaths up to the ice caves were built in 1920. The way up was very long, precipitous and exhausting. Today a cable car brings visitors up to the entrance of the ice cave, which is a listed monument today. A magnesium light effectively illuminates the ice giants in the cave. It’s advisable to wear solid shoes and warm clothes because the temperature in the ice cave is below zero – even in summer. Because of the physical exertion involved, the ice caves are not recommended for babies, disabled people and the elderly.
Hohenwerfen Fortress
The Hohenwerfen Fortress was constructed 900 years ago and is located in the Salzach Valley near Salzburg. For children as well as for adults there is a great deal to see at the fortress: Guided tours through the fortress, weapons exhibitions, various special exhibitions and daily air shows by the local falconry. Furthermore, there is a falconry museum, a historic fortress bar and several gift shops. During medieval events you can get a good impression of medieval life: medieval show fights, knight tournaments for children and special shows by the local falconry are only a few of the highlights to enjoy at the fortress, which has also featured in various films. You can reach the fortress from the parking area after a short 15-minute walk.
